In Memory David Bowie

David Bowie died of Cancer in January 2015 of cancer. A real legend has died and a man that sold 140 million records and  had changed the pop world forever.

F David Robert Jones was born in London in 1947 and in the 1960s had The Laughing Gnome and Space Oddity in the charts, the later becoming a No.1 late in the 1970s..

1970 he had minor chart hits with Prettiest Star and amazingly Changes.

In 1972 he really hit the UK single charts with hits like Starman from the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and was a song about an alien talking to the youth of planet Earth. The performance on Top of the Pops caused controversy with him dressed in a very tight shiny suit.

1972 had two more top ten hits with John I'm Only Dancing which was often spoken about as a gay relationship record. Jean Genie was the biggest chart record of that year getting to No.2 in the UK charts, which was inspired by Iggy Pop.

In 1973 from the album Alladin Sane came in Drive in Saturday a song about the aftermath of a war that nearly destroyed Earth. The next single was his version of My Way a song that would last forever and that was the amazing Life on Mars from the Hunky Dory album

The last single also reached No.3 and was Sorrows.

1974 was a Bowie year too with four more top 30 hits the first being Rebel Rebel from Diamond Dogs and again more lyrics about sexuality,  Rock N Roll Suicide and Diamond Dogs, followed by the Single Diamond Dogs. A cover version of Knock on Wood was a top ten hit too.

1975  gave David three top twenty hts. The first  was Young Americans and Fame. Golden Years was his last hit of 1975 and came from the album Station to Station.

1976 no single hits, but in 1977 he was back with a top 3 hits with Sound and Vision and the amazing Heroes. This song was inspired by a German group and the producer was Toni Viconti who was married to chart topper Mary Hopkin.

No big hit the next year,but he left the 70s in 1979 with Boys Keep Swinging an a new Version of John I'm Only dancing.

Here are the pop charts of the week ending 4th March 1977 (UK).

1.Chanson D'Amour by Manhattan Transfer

This was a number one in UK but did not chart in the US, the group came from New York, and were named  after a 1925 book called "Manhattan Transfer".

Chanson D'Amour was originally a hit in 1958 and 1966 by various artists, but this is the one version that made it a 70s number 1.
