In The 1970s Boomtown Rats


Irish band fronted by Bob Geldof who was born in 1951 and started the group in 1975. Other members included Pete Briquette,Johnie Fingers, Garry Roberts and Simon Crowe. In 1976 they signed up with London company Ensign Records.

In 1977 they had a No. 11 hit with Lookin' After No. 1 which became the first New Wave song to appear on Top Of The Pops on BBC. This was followed in the same year by Mary Of The 4th Form which also came from the debut album The Boomtown Rats.

1978 would be a big year for the group. She's So Modern got No. 12 from the album A Tonic For The Troops.Like Clockwork reached No. 6 later in the year.
Rat Trap was the big No.1 for the group in 1978 and was written by Bob himself. Rat Trap was all about being stuck in the game of life. The record went Gold.

1979 and another No. 1 song and another Gold selling single with I Don't Like Mondays. Again written by Bob and refers to an American college shooting where the gunman was asked why he did it. He replied I Don't Like Mondays.

The last single of the 1979s was a No.13 hit called Diamond Smiles
