In The 1970s Greyhound

UK reggae band formed in 1970 featuring Glenroy Oakley. The first single hit was Black And White a hit from 1954 written by Earl Robinson and David Arkin. The song was about school segregation in the U.S. and was a hit for Pete Segar and Sammy Davis Jnr.

Their robes were black, Their heads were white,
The schoolhouse doors were closed so tight,
Nine judges all set down their names,
To end the years and years of shame.

The Greyhound hit was in 1971, but it was a bigger hit the following year by Three Dog Night. The lyrics above were removed from the Greyhound version. I have no idea why.

In 1972 the group had a hit with Moon River, a reggae version of the Andy William classic, and it works too. This UK version is sung by Danny Smith and Glenroy Oakley on Trojan records and it reached No. 12 in the UK charts.

The last single was No. 20 hit called was called I Am What I Am. A good reggae band who’s music will live on on many a reggae compilation cd.
